WHAT THE GOOD FOLKS SAY ABOUT THE RIP CURL STEW: ” The Rip Curl Stew is a great annual Canadian event to bring together the locals and international surfers alike to compete on some of our best home breaks. Tofino is always a great time and my money is on another local winner this year!” Mel Greene -Director of Communications, Sitka “Dose.ca is proud to be involved once again with The Rip Curl Stew event in Tofino. This competition is set to become the premier surfing event in Canada.” Scott Andrews – Product Manager, Dose.ca “The Rip Curl Stew is the most dynamic local event held in Canada! It is a staple event for Local Bragging rights and The Rip Curl Stew is the only time you can surf with ProsÉAnd they’re not allowed to drop in on you!” Bill Fend -Long Beach Surf Shop *A Special Note from Drew Hakshaw, Rip Curl Stew Contest Organizer ” I’m looking forward to the Stew 4 this year. I can’t believe we have been working on this event for already 4 years! I want to especially thank all the sponsors that are involved with the event; without these sponsors this event would never happen. We have to remember why we go through all this effort each year in holding this event maybe some people have different ideas or beliefs why they put so much effort into the event, but I truly do it for the young generation of surfing. To see the young kids all get stoked on the contest and go compete against each other then at the end of the day hold up some trophies. That, to me, is why we do what we do. I would especially like to thank Rip Curl, Monster Energy Canada, The City Of Tofino, The Long Beach Lodge, all sponsors and volunteers that are involved in the Rip Curl Stew 4. Again this year you will see more Stew developments and I’m hoping the surf community of Canada enjoys the contest alongside myself!”
THE LEGACY LIVES ON…. For 40 years, Rip Curl has played a leading role in the surf industry and continues to move forward in Canada by gaining the rights, four years straight, to hold the only surf contest this summer in Tofino, BC, and one of the only Surf Contests in Canada. Yes, Rip Curl will continue to stick to the grass roots that helped make us the market leader in surfing, but we’ll also charge on into the future and push riding to a new level.
RIP CURL plans on dishing out more stew this year in Tofino and we hope to have your support. For Further Information, Please Contact: Rip Curl Canada Becky Ellis Event Coordinator bellis@ripcurl.com 604.731.9000

U.S. magazine ranks Tofino top surf town in North America
Tofino, B.C., has been ranked the best surf town in North America by an influential U.S. magazine.
Outside magazine handed the Vancouver Island locale the top honour as part of its inaugural Editor’s Choice Awards for 2010.
Peter Devries, Canada’s number one surfer and winner of the 2009 O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada, says Tofino is a great place to ride the waves.
Outsider has previously named Tofino’s Chesterman Beach, specifically the area around Frank Island, as one of the best on the continent for beginner surfers.
Tofino was chosen from among 20 beginner surf spots the magazine named across North America. (Westcoaster.ca)
The Best North American Beginner Surf Spots
Outside Magazine rates North Chesterman, Tofino, one of North America’s best beginner surf spots!
Frank Island—Tofino, British Columbia
Surf Report: On the south end of Chesterman Beach on the west coast of Vancouver Island is one of the best beginner breaks in North America. Cold in the winter, cold in the summer (this is Canada, after all so pack your wetsuit).
Scene: Tofino is the Surf City of Canada, a shockingly beautiful hamlet that gets 118 inches of rain per year, so it’s craggy like Ireland, quaint like New England, and as green as Hanalei, Hawaii. Beach fires and family BBQ’s line these sandy beaches, the smell of fresh cooked salmon wafting into the line-up most summer evenings. Tofino is a mellow scene that some say is similar to that of California in the 60s. It’s an out of the way place very popular with Canadians and tourists from all over. Snow covered glaciers and 1,000-year-old cedar trees form the backdrop. Don’t forget to look ahead for black bears when walking down the beach trail. This part of the world gets huge surf half the year, but Frank Island knocks down all that fury allowing beginners to splash away like baby ducks on either side of the tombolo (spit of land) that connects the island to Vancouver Island.
Bonus: Great stream, lake, and ocean fishing; kayaking by river, fjord, and open sea; and sight-seeing that is a little bit New England, a little bit Viking, a little bit Paul Bunyan. A place most people don’t even know exists, but is one of the best, most unique beginner spots north or south of the border because of that weird little tombolo.

How to repair a ripped or cut Wetsuit
Wetsuit tears are inevitable but most tears are easy to repair if you use the right glue and technique.
Large Rips or Tears
Materials: Wetsuit cement (glue), brush, waxed dental floss or good nylon thread.
If you have large rips or tears or a tear that’s along a seam or stress point, you should stitch up the cut first using
1. Clean and dry the suit.
*You can put a plastic bag behind the tear to prevent the glue from sticking to the wrong part of the suit.
2. Using your brush or the one provided in the can of wetsuit cement, coat both sides of the newly sewn rip with neoprene cement to make it watertight.
3. Hold the two sides apart and allow the glue to dry for 24 hours. (Don’t stick together yet)
4. Apply a second coat of glue and let it dry for a few minutes.
5. Squeeze the two sides together and let it set for 24 hours before using.
*Be careful to line both side up as accurately as possible.
Small Cuts
Just clean the suit and glue like above without stitching the suit first.

The Cove Movie: Save the Dolphins
The Secret is Out. Spread the Word.
The Cove exposes the slaughter of more than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises in Taiji, Japan every year, and how their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan and other parts of Asia, often labeled as whale meat. The majority of the world is not aware this is happening as the Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. The focus of the Social Action Campaign for The Cove is to create worldwide awareness of this annual practice as well as the dangers of eating seafood contaminated with mercury and to pressure those in power to put an end to the slaughter.
